Safe Space Images : When I'm asked to talk about my art work, my normal reply is, "It just ain't that deep." But then I was asked to do this project and yes, it was that deep. I was asked to be part of a group of women artists who would mentor, guide some of the women of Safe Space in an art project creating tee-shirts. I couldn't understand how I would be able to do that since I'm a photographer and I don't really draw or paint. My work includes taking photos and then digitally enhancing them to create a piece of art. So I thought I could shoot photos documenting the event but I was reminded that the women and children at Safe Space were there to be sheltered from their abuser. No one could know who they were or where they were. Basically they are in hiding and we can't show their faces. So I created photo transfers for them to work with along with the paints & jewlery. I then thought I needed to show how hard this is for these women, they are in a jail of sorts. And even though they have been through so much, they now must deal with living behind "these" bars. I think it's important to show everyone and bring awareness about this project and how it helps, if just for a brief moment, these brave women, and help raise funds to continue this much needed shelter. I didn't realize that even days later, I would still be so moved by this project. In speaking with the other artists, they too were moved by this experience and said things like, "Those women went to town on those paints." "Like they were trying to get rid of something." said Nadya, Jewelry Designer and owner of Dream Pieces & Outrageous Wear. Noemi, who came along for support and to help with the art supplies, said "While I wasn't physically abused, I was mentally. I knew that if I went there I would be able to make a difference in their lives. Until you start loving yourself you are not going to get out of it. What helped me was my spirituality and I saw that a lot of the women had spirituality in what they were creating and writing on their tee-shirts, so it left me feeling hopeful that they would see their way out. For me, 30 years ago there wasn't a safe space." How sad I thought, they can't even pose next to their work of art, so in their honor, I photographed their hands at work.
